Some history and work that has been done regarding this donation drive
Students in SJTU are doing their part -- volunteer to help education in GuiZhou mountain rural area kids.

Last year, Zhangmin Wang who is our current association secretary (1991 graduate, Material Engineering graduate) went with this group of young students to GuiZhou, and this is the link for last year:
http://sites.google.com/site/guizhoustudent/
This is Zhangmin's writing about this group of students, and I believe words of mouth means much more to us:
Just a few words about these students. I traveled with them to GuiZhou for 10 days last summer. They are very passionate about helping kids in GuiZhou. Some of them are from local (i.e. GuiZhou), and some of them have major in education. They planned and executed very well and I am sure their time and efforts will change some of the kids' life that they helped.
Last year, they tried very hard to get help from organizations such as Google (Google donated 150 schoolbags) and friends. This year, I think it would be even harder due to the deteriorating economy. Therefore, a little bit help from us, might make their job much easier. All the donations go to the hands of those Guizhou kids that really need help. These young guys were very disciplined about spending with detailed record and report. They paid all the travel cost from their own pocket.

Following is my testimony (1986 graduate, Biomedical Engineering)
I went back to Shanghai in April 2009. I went ahead and met four of the young students who went last year. I am really impressed by their professional attitude towards this mission. They have prepared the lessons that they will teach the kids. Also talked about their research project about impact on kids whose parents lost their job because of economy downturn. I feel that I really want to do something to help them accomplish this mission. They have this year project planning all written down in following web site where they try to get fund for kids in GuiZhou rural area:
