Status update for SJTU-SV Best Teaching Fund

SJTU First Best Teaching Award Ceremony was held successfully on 04/28/2006.

• 02/23/06: Thanks for Xin Chen and Hao Zheng for submitting their checks as promised in the Night of Shanghai party! The List of Contributors for the 2nd Round has now been published on the website. Total donations received for 2nd round is $1673!

• 02/21/06: Received checks from Changyi Gu -- thanks for continuing supporting us on the 2nd year!

  Thanks to 16 alumni and friends donated at the party with total of $1143, with $273 in cash and $870 in check and another 7 alumni committed to mail a check later:

• 6/21/05: Thanks to the largest contribution received so far today from John Song (宋建斌), who also helped us to break the $5000 milestone! In his enclosed letter, John wrote: "Although I didn't have the privilege of being a student of Mr. Yan, I have seen many dedicated mentors like Mr. Yan. They taught us more than just knowledge. They taught us how to live out our life large. I hope that Mr. Yan's legacy be remembered for generations to come. May his passing be the inspiration to those who have witnessed his story. Please convey my condolence to Mr. Yan' s family and to his colleagues at Jiao Tong University. We are truly privileged to have Mr. Yan as our mentor and our model."

• 6/18/05: Thanks for the check received today from Stephen Gao! President Xie from SJTU will be coming to the US for the JiaoDa Reunion in Chicago this month. A letter from SJTU-SV will be presented to President Xie to debrief him about our effort for Mr. Yan Fund, and wish the reunion a big success.

• 6/10/05: Thanks for contribution received today from Xiaohui Qiu (邱晓晖). A SJTU alumnus, Xiaohui currently works in Michigan and heard Mr. Yan's story from her friend and SJTU classmate Mei Mei (梅玫). Progress has also been made with regarding how to set up and implement Mr. Yan’s Best Teacher Fund -- thanks to Sean Yao who made the visit to Shanghai and had the discussion with the university. It has been decided that The Fund will be used only for the best teachers voted by the on-campus students. Each year 2 teachers with the most votes will be rewarded US $500 each on Teachers' Day. All donation checks will be mailed to CTUAFA soon to be transferred to SJTU fund on June 20th.

• 5/25/05: thanks to Weiwei Wang (王韡韡), who is not from SJTU but heard Mr. Yan's story from her friend Mei Mei (梅玫) and mailed in the contribution.

• 5/20/05: Lunch meeting hold in Sunnyvale today with Tony Ling and a few other SJTU-SV executive members. Tony went through the details on their visit to Mr. Yan's home in Shanghai earlier this month and passed to Mei Mei the receipt from Mr. Yan's daughter for the $1000 cash donation. Mr. Yan's family was very grateful for our group's support and wanted Tony to pass everyone a big "thank you." Two additional contributions also came in today -- our thanks to Vicky Xu and James Jin.

• 5/19/05: Thanks for the generous anonymous contribution from Atlanta!

• 5/17/05: Thanks for Jack Yang (杨雷鸣) & Jean Wei (魏苍君) for their contribution. In their letter Jack wrote, "My wife and I were touched by Mr. Yan's story. Enclosed please find our donation check. I should have done this earlier but just couldn't put together. Even though we don't know Mr. Yan personally, we feel his story is representative among all the hardworking teachers in China. We sincerely wish his family well and offer our deepest condolence."

• 5/12/05: Our special thanks to Xiaojian Yang (杨晓剑), a friend of SJTU, for breaking our $4000 milestone. Xiaojian is a Tsinghua alumni who was so touched by Mr. Yan's spirit after his friend Mei Mei (梅玫) shared with him the story.

• 5/10/05: Cash donation of $1000 has been delivered to Mr. Yan's family! Here is the email from Dongxi Sun (孙东曦) today, " 昨天上午凌幼宏 (Tony Ling) 和我去了交大. 在交大电子信息与电气工程学院党委付书记莫光成副教授的陪同下将$1,000 现金交给晏才宏老师的女儿. $1,000现金是我带回$920, Tony Ling 捐$80. 所以总共 $1,000. 晏才宏老师的女儿写了收条, 我们也拍了照片, 这些都在 Tony 处. 他于今天回美国交给你们. 特写 E-mail 告诉大家." Thanks Dongxi for passing the fund to Mr. Yan's family so quickly. Thanks Tony for the help and contribution!

• 4/29/05: "Sign the Card" Lunch session was hold in Milpitas Square Darda Restaurant and 9 alumni showed up and signed the card for Mr. Yan's family. Additional donations were received during the lunch session from Qing Lucich (朱晴), Katty Zhang, William Lu (陆之晔) and Elaine Sun (孙岚). The card, letters, and $920 of cash donation received were given to alumni Dongxi Sun (孙东曦) to be brought back to Shanghai on 5/6/05 to Mr. Yan's family. We will let the community know when the money is given to Mr. Yan's family.

• 4/26/05: Three checks arrived today with one very touching letter written to Mr. Yan's family. Our thanks go to Dongxi Sun (孙东曦), Xianghui Li & Jinghua Shi, Weili Liu (刘伟利), and special thanks and solute to Jinghua Zhang (张静华) and her husband Liangqiao (何良桥), who just left us forever on 03/6/05 -- read more about Liangqiao and his Minglin Education Fund on http://www.minglin.org/cn.

• 4/19/05: Record breaking day with 7 checks received from our community... Our thanks go to: Xinmei Cai (蔡欣媚), Chen Zhang, Yu Wang, Jiongda (Steve) Liang & Tiancheng Xu, Changyi Gu, Feng Yan (严枫), Gary Ling (凌紫城) & Ling Lu (吕玲). Also a touching note from Yu Wang in the letter, "I attended Yan Sir's class when I was in SJTU with Qiliang. It was a pity that I often cut classes and missed his classes because of my other interests then. I feel so sad to lose such an excellent and virtuous teacher after reading his story. Please forward my best wishes and small gift to his family and let them know that his students all over the world will remember him forever."
